CBD Oil: The Importance Of Whole Plant Medicine
Some CBD products presently on the market are “CBD only”. This means they are not whole plant extracts, but isolated CBD. At first glance, this may seem a superior option – after all, if it’s all CBD wouldn’t it be more medicinal?
These CBD only supplements tend to be far, far less successful. By isolating the CBD from the rest of the hemp/cannabis plant the power of the CBD is neutered. Conversely, by using whole plant extracts the power of the CBD is magnified.
This magnification of the effects of CBD is known as the “entourage effect”. To find out more about this effect, and why it’s so important to consider when buying CBD products, here is a link to Dr Sanjay Gupta discussing it:
The Entourage Effect Explained
Learning The Lesson Of Marinol
In the 1980s and 1990s the pharmaceutical industry created a pure THC drug called “Marinol”, intended for AIDS patients suffering with nausea and wasting. It was a disaster. Not only did the drug cause paranoia and anxiety, but patients discovered that whole plant cannabis was massively more effective at alleviating nausea, allowing them to eat and reducing their pain.
Twenty years later and some companies don’t seem to have learned this lesson. While CBD will not cause anxiety or paranoia like THC does – (in fact CBD is anti-anxiety) – the true power of CBD will never be maximized when isolated from all the Terpenes, Terpenoids and the dozens of other therapeutically valuable cannabinoids.
The cannabis and hemp plants are a medical wonder that have been used for approximately 10,000 years for hundreds of diseases and conditions. The idea that scientists can create a CBD only medicine as effective as mother nature is absurd.
In whole plant form – with all those compounds present – people have reported remarkable results from CBD and the other cannabinoids. In the famous case of Charlotte Figi, as reported by Dr Sanjay Gupta on CNN, her epileptic seizures were drastically reduced after starting taking the cannabidiol. Her life has been transformed without the brain damage-inducing and personality-destroying seizures.
CBD And Other Serious Health Conditions
While the media has spoken a lot about children with epilepsy and how CBD can help them, much less has been spoken about how CBD can assist other serious medical conditions.
Here are some of the conditions CBD and other cannabinoids have been shown to help:
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Alzheimer’s Disease
- Parkinson’s Disease
- Chronic Pain Conditions
- Lyme Disease
- Hepatitis C
- Crohn’s Disease
- Cystic Fibrosis
- Chemo Therapy Treatment
- Huntington’s Disease
- Wasting Disorders
- Tourette’s Syndrome
An extraordinary list for any one substance to treat, but, incredibly, that’s not all…
CBD Kills Cancer
Yes, it really does. The National Cancer Institute, the official US government body that deals with cancer, has a great deal to say about the effects of cannabinoids on tumors. I won’t quote it all here, but take a look at that website and see what the US government has to say about cannabis compounds as a possible cancer treatment.
It’s Not Just CBD
Also, remember that CBD (or cannabidiol) is not the only medically important cannabinoid that exists. There are at least 60 cannabinoids that we know of, and many of them are showing remarkable benefits, including killing cancer cells, reducing inflammation, reducing pain, helping people to sleep, and relaxing brain and body.
These cannabinoids are finally being made into supplements and pharmaceutical products. It’s taken far too long to get to this point, and too many people have suffered and died when a natural plant could have done so much to help.
This is a tragedy which shouldn’t be forgotten… but here we are now with cannabidiol oil within reach.
CBD Products: The Two Areas Needing Major Improvement
As a final thought: while it’s wonderful that cannabinoid products are finally on the market, there are two areas that need a huge improvement:
1) The Strength of the CBD
2) The Price of the CBD
The strongest tinctures now are around 7%. This is far higher than some others, which are barely breaking 1% – and giving CBD a bad name. But even 7% is totally inadequate. When cannabinoid content is up in the 25% area then we will start to see stories of people having their lives changed by this supplement.
Then it will change the world.
I can’t wait.
